Choose a comparable quantity
The larger pack is not always cheaper, and the lower sticker price is not always better value. Unit price compares cost per consistent quantity. Compare mass with mass, volume with volume, length with length or count with count. A kilogram price cannot be directly compared with a litre price unless you have a valid product-specific conversion.
Enter the full pack price and the total quantity represented by that price. For a multipack of four 250 g bags, the quantity is 1000 g, rather than 250 g or four grams. Use the same currency across the comparison; the tool does not fetch exchange rates.
Work a discount into the net price
Suppose pack A costs NPR 180 for 750 g. Its cost per gram is 180 ÷ 750 = 0.24, or NPR 240 per kilogram. Pack B costs NPR 260 for 1 kg with a 10% discount. Its net price is 260 × 0.90 = 234, so it costs NPR 234 per kilogram. Under those inputs, B is cheaper per kilogram by NPR 6.
The discount applies to the entered pack price. Include tax or other charges consistently if they belong in your comparison. A coupon with a minimum spend or a buy-one-get-one condition may need a different total price and quantity calculation before entering it.
| Pack | Net price | Comparable cost |
|---|---|---|
| A: 750 g | 180 | 240 per kg |
| B: 1 kg, 10% off 260 | 234 | 234 per kg |
Keep precision until the final comparison
The tool normalizes compatible units and reports the underlying comparison. Small differences can disappear when rounded to a whole currency unit too early. Compare a useful base such as 100 g or 1 kg and keep enough decimal places to understand the difference.
- Check the total quantity on the package.
- Choose the correct unit family.
- Enter the actual price and applicable discount.
- Compare both products on the same base quantity.
- Verify the result against the shelf label or receipt.
Use price alongside practical constraints
A cheaper unit price does not establish that a larger quantity suits your needs. Consider storage space, product quality and whether you can use the amount. The calculator does not assess food safety, nutrition, brand quality or whether a promotion is worthwhile for an individual household.
If products have different concentrations or serving instructions, raw mass or volume may be a poor comparison. A concentrated cleaner and a ready-to-use cleaner can require comparing equivalent usable amounts using the manufacturers’ directions. Keep those assumptions explicit. The tool handles arithmetic; the choice of a meaningful comparable quantity remains your responsibility.
