Choose a simple silhouette
Pixel-style conversion works best when the important shape survives with very little information. A close crop of one object or face is easier to read than a crowded group photograph. Start by removing distracting borders and leave enough space around the subject for the silhouette to remain clear.
This tool samples a photo onto a small grid and enlarges that grid with crisp edges. It is a stylized transformation, rather than a hand-drawn sprite or a way to recover detail. Small eyes, writing and fine texture can disappear. That loss is part of the effect and should be judged before sharing.
Use the grid as your main control
A 48-pixel-wide square contains 2304 cells. A 96-pixel-wide square contains 9216, four times as many. More cells preserve more of the photograph, while fewer cells create a stronger blocky appearance. Begin around the middle of the available range, then compare one smaller and one larger grid.
Keep the preview at the size the avatar will actually be used. A design that looks expressive at 1000 pixels may turn into an unreadable patch at 48 pixels. If recognition fails, improve the crop or lighting contrast before adding more output pixels.
- Upload a supported photo and check the thumbnail.
- Choose the grid width and any color-quantization option.
- Generate a copy and inspect the subject at a small display size.
- Adjust the crop or grid and create another version.
- Download PNG to preserve sharp color boundaries.
Distinguish sampling from display scale
If a 48-cell-wide design is enlarged by a factor of 12, the output is 576 pixels wide. It still contains 48 meaningful blocks across. Nearest-neighbor enlargement keeps those blocks sharp; smoothing would blend neighboring blocks and soften the intended style.
Color reduction changes another aspect of the result. Fewer colors can simplify a noisy source, but can also merge important shadows or facial features. Compare the outline, lightest areas and darkest areas. Choose a background that separates the subject rather than relying only on more saturated colors.
Export for the destination
Use a PNG master for a crisp graphic. A social platform may resize or recompress the uploaded result, so inspect the published avatar as well as the downloaded file. Where possible, upload a square that fits the platform’s requested dimensions without an extra round of editing.
Use your own image or one you have permission to adapt. Avoid tiny lettering, especially in avatars. If the goal is a consistent game sprite with deliberate outlines and a strict palette, treat the photo conversion as a reference and refine it in a dedicated pixel editor. Keep both the original photo and the small-grid version so you can make a different size later.
